The first collection of all fan to mineralogy would have to be formed by at least one specimen of those more common and representative minerals and rocks.
The collection will be growing in number of unit and number of represented minerals. Until arriving at a point in which the collector wishes to specialize, dedicating its efforts to the mineral collection of a certain type, for example: sulfides, sulphates or silicates, or of a certain geographic location, for example: US or Europe minerals, or worldwide mineral with fluorescent characteristics.

CLASSIFICATION OF MINERALS

In the present time they are known more than 2000 minerals species, these are classified according to its structure and chemical composition in 9 classes, that subdivide in groups and subclasses. These fundamental classes and some of their more common minerals are:

I Native Elements: Gold, Silver, Copper, Mercury, Sulfur, Diamond...

VI Sulphates, molybdates and chromates: Celestine, Crocoite, Gypsum, Wulfenite, Linarite, Anglesite, Baryta...

II Sulfides: Pyrite, Galena, Chalcopyrite, Bornita, Sphalerite, Cinnabar, Molibdenite...

VII Phosphates, arsenates, and vanadates: Vivianite, Apatite, Adamite, Pyromorphite, Turquoise, Vanadinite

III Halides:Halite, Fluorite, Atacamite...

IV Oxides and hydroxides: Quartz, Cuprite, Anatase, Magnetite, Hematite, Goethite, Cassiterite...

VIII Silicates: Garnet, Olivine, Topaz, Epidote, Beryl, Orthoclase, Albite, Vesuvianite, Tourmaline, Dioptase, Mica, Prehnite, Actinolite, Hornblend, Chrysocolla, Talc.
